Who is Barry Harris, and why should I care?
Barry Harris was a jazz piano player and educator who played with many bebop-era jazz musicians, including Charlie Parker.
He claimed that the way we currently teach jazz is different from the way the first generation of jazz players played it.
He taught that the typical chord/scale relationship taught in music schools today is not how these original jazz artists played the music.
Barry's teachings can get quite esoteric, but The Diminished Sixth Scale is a great place to start.
It offers a different/simplified approach to playing songs from the golden jazz era.
Although Barry was a piano player, the Diminished Sixth Scale and its principles work well on the mandolin.
In my 40 years of studying jazz, learning and applying the diminished sixth scale has been one of my most valuable jazz lessons. It has improved my playing and given me a better understanding of how jazz standards are composed and how to improvise in the jazz tradition. My only regret is that I did not learn about this earlier. Don Julin
